TYPOGRAPHIC CALENDAR
//work done during quarantine - only materials available at my household were used//

For my Type II class at RISD, we were asked to design a Typographic Calendar.

When you think of calendars, you think of time. There isn’t a fixed language for the perception of time. We can tell time from tides, shadows, seasons, biological clocks, etc.
Daily, we are surrounded by multiple time indicators- some are obvious and some are not. One. Time indicator that I thought of was fabric. Seasons are indicators of time (summer, fall, winter, spring, cold, hot, etc.) As seasons change so does fabric. It’s something that we don’t pay much attention to, but our choice of fabric reciprocates with time. Thus, for this assignment I decided to create an interrelationship between light, shadows, and fabric. For each month I used the most dominant fabric/fashion pieces worn during that month.
I did staged photography and made sure to have a dramatic feel to my images by playing with the shadows and lighting. The name of the months was done using ready made laser cut letters that I had in my closet. I tried to play with their placement to make their shadows and energy more interesting. As for the numbers and days of the month, those were added digitally via Indesign. I made sure that the type’s scale, placement, and color goes along with the enigmatic feeling that’s being illustrated in my photographs.
This was my first creating visual effects using analogue techniques (without the use of editing software’s).
